What saying(s) best sums up your life?
Edgar Lee Masters
I have studied many times
The marble which was chiseled for me --
A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.
For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;
Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.
Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.
And now I know that we must lift the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.
To put meaning in one's life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is the torture
Of restlessness and vague desire --
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.
(How appropriate that I once had to memorize this poem...)

Yay, the poem is somewhere else besides spam-infested sites! By the by, did we discuss _my_ experience with this poem yet?

It'd be interesting (okay, maybe just to me :-P) to jot down a poem, quote, phrase, etc. every couple of years - something that summed up one's life to that date - and review all of those quotes, poems, and phrases when one was 80.
Just to see how far you'd come.

Gina -- negative. I know I mentioned it to you a
couple weeks ago, perhaps? But not that I know of...
Hey Beth... long time, no see. How ya been?
Interestingly enough, I picked this same poem in 1997 as my Bio on my very first web site. Very little has changed, I guess.

I haven't read any saying that sums up my life - you see, my life has only just begun. ;)
I've lived but a quarter of it [at best] and yet tend to believe the very best moments and most delicious happenings are those occurring today.
Some days don't quite measure up to others [and yes, I must admit, some days outright stink], but I wouldn't trade my little life for any one else's [except perhaps Winston Churchill's at 20].
